Standby Generator Exercise Cadence Prevents Cold-Start Failure

idea

Claim: A standby generator left idle for months without a scheduled exercise run will fail to start during an actual power outage — wet-stacking, fuel degradation, and battery discharge are the three predictable failure modes, and all three are prevented by running the unit under load for 20–30 minutes monthly.

Mechanism

  • Wet-stacking develops when a diesel or natural gas engine runs at very low load (or zero load) — unburned fuel and oil deposits accumulate on exhaust valves and inside the exhaust system, restricting flow and reducing combustion efficiency. A proper load run burns these deposits off.
  • Fuel degradation: natural gas generators avoid this (pipeline gas is always fresh), but diesel standby units can develop fuel breakdown products and microbial growth in the tank if fuel sits too long without treatment or rotation. The fuel system is only exercised — and therefore inspected — during an exercise run.
  • Battery discharge: the starter battery on a standby generator discharges slowly when the unit is idle. Most modern controllers include a battery tender / trickle charger, but these fail silently; an exercise run and its associated controller log confirm the battery is healthy.
  • Cold-start validation: the primary function of the exercise run is proving the unit will start on a cold engine under real-world conditions — the same conditions it faces during an actual outage.
  • Monthly, 20–30 minutes, under real load — the industry standard cited by Duthie Power and Generator Vault12
  • Bi-weekly is the “better balance” recommendation if the generator is critical (medical equipment, refrigerated medication, etc.)
  • Annual professional service covers oil and filter change, spark plug or injector service, coolant, battery test, and inspection of all connections — this is separate from the exercise runs
  • Modern Generac, Kohler, and Cummins controllers include a programmable automatic exercise schedule; confirm it is set and logging

Scope — what this does NOT cover

  • Portable generators have an analogous “annual test-run” requirement but the failure mode differs (stale gasoline, not wet-stacking); see generator-transfer-switch (Home Systems) for portable maintenance procedures
  • Transfer switch maintenance (annual terminal inspection) is a separate task from generator exercise

Idea Compass

North: Where this comes from

  • generator-transfer-switch (Home Systems) — the component this idea lives inside
  • NFPA 110 — the standard requiring monthly exercise runs for Level 1 emergency power systems (commercial/institutional compliance standard; residential best-practice derives from it)

East: Tensions / failure

  • The failure of the exercise cadence is invisible until the moment you need the generator — which is already a crisis
  • Wet-stacking in particular is self-reinforcing: a light-loaded unit continues to stack, making the problem worse with every insufficient run

South: Where this leads

  • Monthly controller log check and annual professional service booking
  • Annual service contract with an authorized dealer (Generac, Kohler, Cummins) covers the service interval

West: What’s similar

  • Sump pump annual test-run — same logic: a device that only runs during an emergency must be tested under realistic conditions before the emergency happens
  • Water heater T&P valve test — another safety device that can fail silently and must be periodically verified
