Burkeman’s “done list” starts empty each morning and fills with accomplishments to counteract the feeling that you begin each day in productivity debt. It’s useful because it makes progress visible. But it’s a daily reset — yesterday’s list is gone, and you start from zero.
A decision journal that accumulates serves the same function with a critical upgrade: it doesn’t reset. The ALOS, AIMS, and decision journals aren’t things that get thrown away. They build up. The accumulated record shows not just what you accomplished on any given day but the trajectory — where you were trying to go and everything you’ve done to get there, together in one place.

Why Accumulation Matters
The self-doubt pattern (Maybe They’re Right and I’m Wrong Is a Posture, Not a Process) runs on absence of evidence. When you can’t see what you’ve done, the default assumption is “not enough.” A daily done list counters this for one day. An accumulated record counters it permanently — you can look back across weeks or months and see the pattern of decisions, the reasoning behind them, and whether they held up.
This connects directly to Trust the Process, Not the Posture: the process includes a record of itself working. The evidence accumulates whether or not you feel confident on any given day. The feelings fluctuate. The record doesn’t.

Common Trap
Treating the accumulated record as obligation rather than evidence. If reviewing past entries feels like homework, the journal has shifted from serving you to demanding from you. The record should be something you can look at when self-doubt spikes — not something you must maintain to feel adequate. The accumulation happens as a byproduct of daily use. The evidence is there when you need it. You don’t need to curate it.
